Although GTA 6 won’t be released until May 26, 2026 (and will probably come to PC in 2027 or 2028), we are laying the groundwork for our community of modders and fans to be ready to transform Vice City and the state of Leonida. Join us to discover the potential of the maps in GTA 6 and how you can be part of this creative revolution!

The Map of GTA 6: An Unprecedented Open World

The second trailer for GTA 6, released on May 6, 2025, gave us an impressive glimpse of the game’s map, and fans haven’t stopped talking about it. The fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, promises to be the largest and most detailed open world ever created by Rockstar Games. According to analysis from Eurogamer and community speculation on Reddit, the map will be three times larger than that of GTA 5, even surpassing the vast terrain of Red Dead Redemption 2. Here are some of the highlights of the official map we’ve seen so far:

  • Vice City: The iconic city returns with a modern design, filled with neon lights, skyscrapers, and vibrant nightlife. Places like Ocean Drive and Catalan Boulevard are filled with details, from NPCs interacting on social media to customized cars parading through the streets.
  • Kelly County: A rural region with swamps inspired by the Florida Everglades, where alligators, airboats, and high-speed chases will be part of the experience.
  • Port VC/Keys: A coastal area with cheap motels, abandoned shopping malls, and ports reminiscent of the Florida Keys, perfect for clandestine missions.
  • Urban and Rural Areas: From slums to luxury areas, the GTA 6 map offers a diversity that ranges from mansions in the hills to improvised camps in the swamps.

A user on Reddit (@GTAMapper2025) estimated that the map could include three main cities (Vice City, Port Gellhorn, and a third yet to be revealed), in addition to over 100 points of interest, such as train stations, airports, and military bases. Rockstar has also confirmed that the map will expand with post-launch updates, ensuring that Leonida will continue to grow over time.

The Potential of Map Modding in GTA 6

Although GTA 6 is not yet available on PC (where modding thrives), the potential for creating custom maps is enormous. The GTA modding community has a long history of transforming Rockstar’s open worlds with impressive maps, and GTA 6 will be no exception. Here are some ideas of what we can expect:

  • Reviving Classics: Can you imagine exploring Liberty City or Los Santos within GTA 6? Projects like the Liberty City Preservation Project (which attempted to bring the GTA IV map to GTA V, although it was canceled in 2025 after contact with Rockstar) demonstrate the community’s interest in bringing classic maps to new games. Once GTA 6 arrives on PC, we could see enhanced versions of Vice City from GTA Vice City or even entirely new maps based on other fictional cities.
  • Maps Inspired by Real Life: The modding community has created impressive maps in GTA 5, such as the FiveM Vice City Expansion mod, which added a preliminary version of Vice City to the game. With the right tools, modders could create maps based on real cities, like Miami, Los Angeles, or even international cities, all within the updated RAGE engine of GTA 6.
  • Thematic and Creative Maps: From post-apocalyptic maps to recreations of science fiction worlds, the creativity of modders knows no bounds. Imagine a GTA 6 map inspired by Cyberpunk 2077, with futuristic skyscrapers and neon lights, or a rural map with festivals in the style of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar has shown increasing support for modding after acquiring Cfx.re (creators of FiveM) in 2023, and in March 2025, Cfx.re launched a tool to help modders adapt GTA 5 mods to GTA 5 Enhanced Edition. This gives us hope that GTA 6 could include official support or community tools (like an updated version of OpenIV) to facilitate map creation and editing.
